Happy Wednesday, friends! If you’ve been watching the news or endlessly scrolling on social media, then you’re probably feeling just as overwhelmed, stressed, and weary as I am. With every news report and social media post that sparks an array of feelings, I hope you are taking the time to both acknowledge your emotions and feel them deeply and also care for yourself in whatever way is most effective and beneficial for you. Both exposure to and experiencing traumatic events is traumatizing. Directly or indirectly fighting oppression is exhausting. Please take care of yourselves, friends. Motivational Monday: It’s OK Not To Be OK

Hi, friends! How are you? No, how are you really? It’s been awhile, hasn’t it? My last post was from March 16th when we were just three short days into quarantining. Businesses were just starting to close and schools were just beginning to prepare for what we all imagined would only be a few weeks of online classes. No one could have imagined that three months after my last post, a post filled with some semblance of hope and optimism, that we’d still be here in quarantine, with many of us still grappling with the same sense of uncertainty, confusion, and disappointment we did when this first started. Most businesses are still closed, schools are closed for the remainder of the school year, and some students are still adjusting to remote learning. There are new ways of grocery shopping, restrictions on social gatherings, and even mandates that require us to wear a mask whenever we’re in public places. Despite recommendations from leading scientists and doctors, some states are just now starting to ease some coronavirus-related restrictions which will give us a glimpse of what it’s like to eat out, shop, and socialize in our new normal. Motivational Monday: A Tale of 2 F.E.A.Rs

IMG_8533I have a friend who is so terrified of literally everything, she practically sits at home and hibernates. She’s even rarely willing to engage in serious conversations because she’s afraid of the possible outcome. Sometimes it gets to the point where she sabotages her own relationships. Now, if you’re thinking “this doesn’t sound like much of a life,” then you’re right! It doesn’t! The thing about fear is that it’s totally natural and understandable. We’re all afraid of something, it just looks different. Maybe you’re afraid of scary movies or heights. Maybe you’re afraid to say no. Maybe you’re afraid of rejection or taking risks. Maybe it’s all of the above, and it makes sense! Life can be a pretty scary place and situations may arise that cause us to pause and maybe even retreat, especially when we can’t anticipate the consequence, but when we allow fear to control us to the point where we’re paralyzed, well, that’s when we’ve got to put in some work and decide to either Forget Everything And Run or Face Everything And Rise.

Motivational Monday: Embrace the New Moon and Celebrate New Beginnings

Happy Monday, friends! It has been exactly 101 days since my last post, and while I never intended to take a break, particularly one this long, I need you to know that it was needed in a way I didn’t realize or expect. And it’s probably no surprise that my return is one day after the new moon–a point where we leave behind the old and make way for the new. I don’t think this period of the month or my life could have come at a more perfect time! Now, the break was hard, as are most disruptions and endings. But when we let go of that which does not serve us, when we leave behind the pain and suffering, we make room for peace, love, and joy. I’m feeling empowered and renewed this morning, and I’m so happy to be back, so here’s to this new moon and new beginnings. May goodness abound. And before I share all the goodness and positive changes I’ve encountered over the last three months, I feel like I need to explain my absence. In short, I no longer felt like myself.

Motivational Monday: Leave Fear Behind

Happy Motivational Monday, friends! It’s hard to believe this is the last motivational post of 2016, but I’m so thankful we’ve made it to this day. Friends, as I write this post, I have to admit I am EXHAUSTED! Not because I hosted Christmas brunch yesterday (though that might be a tiny contributor), but because I just spent the last three hours or so sitting and working through Lara Casey’s Make it Happen 2017 Powersheets (an intentional goal setting planner) and Make it Happen: Surrender Your Fear, Take the Leap, and Live on Purpose (2014), and I’ve barely made a dent in either. My head is pounding and adrenaline is rushing through my veins. I am pumped up! Casey asks really thought-provoking questions that require you to get real with yourself. I don’t think I was ready to admit somethings, but as taxing as this process was, I found my honest responses reflective, illuminating, and beneficial. I will write and post a proper review of both books later this week, but I just had to stop, take a breath, and share what has stood out to me thus far: fear is a powerful thing.

Friends! It’s almost time to celebrate, toss your texts to the side, and kick up your feet. Hopefully, you’ve caught the Hamilton buzz and have been “writing day and night like it’s going out of style.” If you too find yourself just “non-stop,” remember to take a much-needed break between your studies. Breaks are scientifically proven to improve your focus and productivity, but you have to make sure you’re selecting effective study break options that will help you reenergize and refocus. While watching Netflix or playing video games are easy go-to’s, they won’t give your brain the rest it needs to recover. Remember to schedule in five-minute breaks after 30-60 minutes of studying. Motivational Monday: Practice Personal Patience

Patience (noun): The capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset. See also self-restraint, perseverance, and persistence.

I’m not a patient person. In fact, if I think about my life, it’s all just been a series of me failing at exercising patience. When I was younger, I took gymnastics, tennis, and piano. My parents spent a ridiculous amount of money to help me pursue these extracurricular activities, but I just didn’t have the “sticktoitiveness,” as my mom calls it. I also spent eighth-grade through, well, now struggling with my weight. From Weight Watchers to veganism to hiring a personal trainer (or two), I’ve tried diet after diet to permanently shed the weight, but failed for a number of reasons: I’m lazy and food is awesome are two obvious excuses; however, when I really look deeper, when I sit down and truly consider what my weight loss and extracurricular failures have in common it’s patience, or the lack thereof.
