Wow! It has been 498 days since my last post, and to say things have changed feels like a bit of an understatement. Let’s see. 498 days ago I was in my second year of graduate school, considering rekindling things with an old flame, and living and working in a place I love and surrounded by those who love me. Life was stressful and hectic for sure, but nothing compares to the hurdles we are currently facing. A quick catch up from me goes like this: I graduated, traveled to Europe, moved to Boston, and now work as a mental health clinician at a children’s hospital. The transition has been both rewarding and challenging, but I’ll share more about that at another time because there are more pressing matters at hand. We are currently living in the midst of overwhelming chaos and uncertainty. The pandemic and all that is unknown has resulted in mass hysteria and a sense of heaviness and hopelessness that, on some days, feels unbearable. Day in and day out, I try to remind myself of the good, the light, the bright, the joy, the laughter, the peace, the fun, the hope, and the love. I will admit, that sometimes it’s easier and sometimes it’s nearly impossible. And if I’m feeling the push and pull, confusion, hopelessness, and overall drain of each moment of the day, I can only imagine what you are feeling. That’s why I think that now is as good of a time as any for Kermit Says… to return. It’s been too long and there are far too many things going on in the world, in your own backyard, and within you that deserve support, encouragement, healing, and so much love. I hope you’ll join me again. Continue reading “Motivational Monday: What’s Permanent? Love.”
This weekend was filled with triggering news that I’m sure brought up anxiety and all sorts of emotions. And as I shared on the Kermit Says… Facebook and Instagram pages, there is no right or wrong way to react. We are all fully-formed humans with valid feelings and experiences that have shaped our very being. With every news report and social media post that sparked an array of feelings, I hope you took time to both acknowledge them and feel them deeply and to care for yourself in whatever way was most effective and beneficial for you to mend and heal. Now, are you ready to press on and power up because there is work to do? You, my friend, have a voice that is valuable and worthy. We need you. You need you. It’s time to change the game. I’m going to keep today’s post short and simple because the solution to what happened this weekend (and every day before and after) is just that: short and simple. It’s hard to leave a weekend like this feeling anything but anger and sadness. Surprised? Not so much. Events like what occurred in Charlottesville, Virginia happen on a daily basis, they’re just oftentimes not as explicit, violent, or demonstrated on such a mass scale. The thing about racism, white supremacy, xenophobia, religious intolerance, homophobia, and sexism–more specifically–is that they are insidious and they don’t have to be overt with the stereotypical symbols of hate, like burning crosses, angry mobs, and lynch ropes, to be painful and harmful. Acknowledge that. Acknowledge your own bias and the beliefs you have that cause you to judge and mistreat people who are different from you. Acknowledge your own privilege. Have conversations. Do the work and recognize that that work won’t be easy. Do it anyway because at the end of the day our job on this earth is to make life easier, happier, and better for everyone, not just some. The only way things are going to change is if you do something to change it. 200 + years is a long time to hate others. It’s also a long time to live in fear. Isn’t it time we actually do something about this? Love on someone today. Maybe it starts with love. Maybe that’s the first step in the right direction. Maybe we could at least try.
Happy Motivational Monday, friends! I don’t know about you, but I had an incredible weekend, and I owe so much of that to you guys. I turned 29 on Saturday and was spoiled rotten with so many delicious treats, cards, and gifts, I’ve fallen into a bit of a sugar coma. One cake from my sister, two cakes from one student, and a platter of the most amazing cupcakes and cookies I’ve ever eaten from another student. How is it possible to boil down so much love and pack it into the sweetest and most filling desserts I’ve had in a while? The thing about birthdays and birthday treats is that you can’t help but feel so loved, it’s almost a bit overwhelming. In fact, sometimes I’m so happy and smitten, it feels like my heart will burst at any moment. So just when I’m about to pop, I share this love, like birthday treats, with the ones I cherish most.
Happy Friday, friends! This has been such an incredible week, but I’ll admit, it’s also been ridiculously long and exhausting. I’ve been so busy, it feels like I’ve been running around like a chicken with my head cut off. I’m really looking forward to starting Spring Break in less than two weeks, but until that day comes, I’ll settle for a nice, relaxing weekend. Do you have any plans? Comment below! In the meantime, take a look at a few of my favorite finds of the week:
Happy Valentine’s Day, friends! Whether you find yourself in a committed relationship, in the beginning stages of a new one, or happily single, I am sending so much love your way. There is so much to love about love: the electricity that floats through your fingertips when your hands touch, the butterflies in your stomach and racing heart when your eyes meet, and the chemistry you feel every time you speak. When you find someone who loves you for you, you feel understood and like you can be your whole self in a world that makes it very difficult to be fully you. When it’s the right love, it makes you happy. It makes you skip and smile. Love is not, however, finding someone to complete you, but to complement you, and knowing the difference is key. Love means having someone with whom you can do and share things. Love means you matter to someone else. Being in love is like actually wanting to be awake because your real life is so much better than your dreams.
I could go on and on, but let’s face it, there are other folks, like songwriters, who’ve done a much better job than I have in describing love. Take a listen to a few of my favorite love songs and comment below with yours!
Happy Friday, friends! I hope you had a beautiful and productive week. If you’ve been following the Kermit Says… Snapchat (@kermitsays), then you know exactly what’s been going on in my life. So many incredible changes and opportunities are heading my way, it almost feels like I’m dreaming. Sometimes it’s even overwhelming, but it’s all good things, exciting things, life-changing things, and I can’t wait for this next chapter for it’s reminded me that when good things happen to you, it’s important to keep the ball rolling and pay it forward.
Be the good for someone else.
Today I’m sharing a heartwarming story about a man who does more than pays it forward. In fact, I’d suffice it say he serves as an inspiration to us all by spreading love, care, and joy to those who need it most. Take a look:
